A girls gotta have some sugar…
(and i don’t mean that added sugar crap)
I mean let’s get serious….who could ever go through life without a little dessert every now and then? 😉 I sure couldn’t! For weight management, it is definitely better to have a few healthier treats throughout the week then trying to completely forgo sweets, which would just set you up for failure and worse dessert binges later on! So, to give some lovin’ to my sweet tooth, I have a few healthier desserts that I know satisfy my body and my cravings.
For instance, around that lovely time of month for girls, some of us just HAVE to have chocolate! When these cravings hit, it is best to go for real dark chocolate (the higher the cacao content, the better). A few squares of this are filling, full of healthy cancer-fighting antioxidants (and lower sugar and fat content that that of its sibling Milk Chocolate). Frequently eating small amounts of chocolate has even been shown to correlate with a lower BMI: article here. It also has been shown to help with insulin sensitivity and blood sugar control. So yes, I’ll take some dark chocolate please!
Some more of my favorite desserts are:
Dark Chocolate covered frozen banana slices. Comes in packets of 4 little banana pieces and the packet is only 100 calories! Perfect portion control and dark chocolate covered fruit is always such a healthy option. These babies are DELICIOUS!
Cookies and Cream flavor :). This stuff is an awesome replacement for icecream. The ENTIRE PINT is only 150 calories. I repeat: THE ENTIRE PINT! So a half cup serving for most ice creams is at least 200 calories, but a half cup serving of Arctic Zero is only 35 calories! Wowzas! It’s also gluten free so perfect for me. It’s basically made of whey protein, so no milk or cream sugars/fat. They recently just came out with even more amazing flavors too (my faves are seal salt caramel and chocolate chip)! And look at all the healthiness in each one:
Vanilla flavor. These are seriously my obsession. Like I could pop these little bites into my mouth ALL.DAY.LONG. if no one stopped me. These are a little higher in calories, but are also gluten free, dairy free, and made from almond milk. They are lower in fat and covered in chocolate for a nice cold treat. 15 little bites are 250 calories so it’s good to watch portion size cause I always easily could devour many more than just 15….oops 😉 There is a bit of saturated fat in these, but they are all from healthy sources of almonds, coconut oil, and unsweetened chocolate. Aka all healthy fats!

Snickerdoodle flavor-HEAVEN IS ON EARTH AND IT IS IN THIS CONTAINER!!!! I just recently found this at Whole Foods and had to buy it. I can’t remember the last time that a). I had fresh cookie dough that was gluten free AND didn’t contain any raw eggs and b). that I had snickerdoodle cookies in general. YUM! I was assuming this was going to be at least 15 bucks since it was at Whole Foods but it was only 5 bucks! It’s perfect raw. They also had chocolate chip flavor. I will try baking cookies with them soon :). Other flavors include Sugar cookie and Chocolate Chips (plus more non-gluten free flavors)
If you at least have read a few posts on my blog, you probably can already tell I am obsessed with Quest bars. I can’t go a week without one! They come in so many awesome flavors, are chocked full of protein and fiber, and are gluten free and all at least 200 calories or less. Super filling for a post workout snack but also PERFECT as a healthy dessert when you are craving the real thing! For instance, the cookies n creme flavor literally tastes like an oreo…or better I’d say. They are delicious melted or broiled in the oven for a few minutes to make it really taste like a decadent homemade dessert. You can buy them at your local GNC, Complete Nutrition, or Smoothie King stores. (And even the Whole Foods in Alpharetta sold them!)
I’ve been a fan of these for a long time, ever since I first spotted them at Earthfare. These little cookies are each 84 calories, but are chocked full of healthy fats. They are made of dried unsweetened coconut, almond flour, unfiltered maple syrup, cold-pressed coconut oil, vanilla extract, and Himalayan sea salt. They are BOMB! They are gluten free, vegan, raw, low glycemic/low sugar, and non GMO. I only buy these occasionally, so I try to make them last for a while :).
