Once a guy-dominated sport where people punch each others brains out for the fun of it (and to show off their strength), boxing is making a mainstream comeback. It has been popping up more and more in the fitness world and modeling industry as the “it” way to get that hot body lately, probably ever since top-models and Victorias Secret Angels admitted to boxing as part of their training to get runway-ready. Even I’ve been pulled into the trend and won’t look back. Boxing is great for a multitude of reasons; not to mention the killer abs and arms you obtain from it. It also is completely stress-busting, mood lifting, and just overall makes you feel like a total warrior badass, and really, who doesn’t want to feel that way?
Get a killer workout in a short amount of time (high intensity interval training).
Boxing is a serious calorie-torcher. You’re utilizing multiple muscle groups, moving constantly, and have to be quick on your feet. Instead of going on a slow, long jog at the gym, you can do an intense boxing session for 30 minutes and get more out of it than an hour long treadmill sesh. High intensity interval training is the #1 key for fat loss. And think you’ll get big bulky muscles from boxing? SO not true. Boxing uses a lot of quick repetitive movements that result in more toning than bulking. Much different than lifting heavy weights…you’re using your own body weight and working many different muscle groups. Therefore, you get an overall sculpted body. Your core works hard to balance and throw punches, your legs are working by stabilizing your body, and your arms, back, and shoulder muscles are working diligently when you throw punches and jabs.
You don’t have to actually fight people…
No, you don’t have to wear a mouthguard, get suited up, and actually hit people in the face (unless that’s your thing). That is only for true MMA fighting…boxing as just a workout is much different. You work with speed bags, heavy bags, and mitt work to get in the fitness side of boxing, without the actual fighting. If you’re afraid of going to a boxing gym and it being just “real boxing” with contact, call first and see if they offer a fitness class. Many boxing gyms are now branching out, including more women, and doing cardio circuit classes with boxing infused.
You get fit. QUICK.
Boxing is a perfect mix of cardio and strength training, especially if you do sparring or mitt work. You have to constantly move your body, dip down to avoid “hits”, and use your entire body to box. Because of this, you get fit, and fast. Especially when you do a combination of boxing and circuit training (my favorite workout!). Mitt work involves working with another person or a personal trainer, where they hold up sparring or punch mitts and call out combinations like “1,2” which means hit their left mitt, then right. They call out multiple combinations continuously. It’s relatively easy to learn and pick-up, so it won’t take long before you’re doing minute-long hits without blinking. The perfect mix for ultimate fat burning would involve circuit training: aka sparring/boxing circuits intertwined with strength training moves.
♥ For an example workout with no partner needed, you could do 1 minute of box jumps (15 sec rest), 1 minute hitting a boxing bag (15 secs rest), 1 minute jump lunges (15 sec rest), 1 minute hitting a boxing bag (15 sec rest), 1 minute of squats (15 sec rest), 1 minute hitting a boxing bag (15 secs), and 1 minute of plank commandos. Rest after 1 complete set, and repeat another 1-2 times depending on your athletic level!
Bust stress + reduce risk for chronic disease.
Any workout that gets your heart rate up, burns calories, and increases your respiratory rate is a good way to get in shape. This can help with overall health and reducing your risk for obesity and chronic illness. Not to mention, your mental health. Punching the absolute shit out of something feels pretty dang good when you’re stressed out, angry, tired, or feeling any other emotion in the books. Had a rough day at work? Go punch it out at the gym rather than storing up all that emotion (bad, bad bad!). Boxing makes you release any and all tension you may be feeling in a healthy and beneficial way.
Feel like a badass.
I can’t think of anything that makes me feel quite as warrior-like and freakin’ badass as boxing. You feel in control, strong, powerful, and like you can take on the world. Do something for yourself, and take up boxing. YOU WILL BE SO GRATEFUL YOU DID. And maybe never want to go to a boring barre class again….

My own experience boxing started back in college a few years ago when my gym offered a class called “Fight Club”. A killer cardio circuit class with boxing as its base. I fell in love with it and was soon going every week. Surprisingly enough, the class was a great mix of guys and girls, which made it comfortable to check it out. From sorority girls, to grown-ass men, the class was perfectly varied! The hour-long sessions consisted of various circuits, strength training, personal trainer 1-on-1 mitt work, heavy bag work, and speed bag work. We worked up a sweat kicking, punching, jumping, squatting, and anything else under the sun. It definitely was that next level challenge that made me want to amp up my workouts. I highly recommend checking out any local gyms that offer a similar boxing class. It’s SO worth it!
