Read below for why BMI is BS 👇🏻👇🏻 . . 1️⃣ BMI was created over 200 years ago by a mathematician to find any easy way to allocate resources to the population. It was NEVER intended to be used for health purposes. 2️⃣ It doesn’t account for body composition - muscle weighs more than fat, and someone can have a BMI in the higher range and be completely healthy! It would be like a butcher weighing meats at the deli / it can’t tell you how lean the cut is, it’s just it’s overall mass. 3️⃣ It cannot tell how healthy you are. Period. Research has found that you can be healthy in all ranges of BMIs, and that healthy habits and behaviors are more accurate determinants of health than BMI. 4️⃣ It doesn’t account for diversity! Highly recommend watching the video titled “Poodle Science” on YouTube if you haven’t yet - this explains it well. Body diversity exists! . . There are many more reasons why BMI is a crappy indicator of health, and I encourage you to do your own research on it! Highly recommend the book “Anti-Diet” by chr1styharrison to dive into the effects of weight stigma - very eye-opening. . . SO ready for Thanksgiving this year 🙌🏼🦃 What are your favorites on the menu? I’m more team savory with T-giving foods - gimme all the Turkey, ham, cornbread, and stuffing 🤤 . . Navigating intuitive eating during the holidays has come up all week in sessions - so I wanted to give my top 3️⃣ tips here for the holidays: 1️⃣ Maintain structured meals and snacks. Eat regularly, avoid skipping meals, and always have breakfast the day of thanksgiving! Otherwise you’ll simply end up heading into the meal overly hungry, and feel more out of control. 2️⃣Practice mindfulness when you can - plate your food, sit at the table, eat slowly, and savor your food 😋 3️⃣ Avoid the deprivation mindset - it’s easy to overeat our favorite holiday foods when they only come around once a year. Remind yourself that pleasurable food will always be available - and that you will have this food again. It’s more satisfying to enjoy the amount that feels good vs. trying to “get it all in” in fear of not having it in the future. . . Want more support during the holidays? No matter where you are on your journey, it can be so easy to want to skip meals on Thanksgiving. Challenge that voice, and still maintain normal eating during the holiday. Skipping meals will only set you up for failure and will cause you to be even more hungry and feel more out of control around those foods you feel anxious around. Remember, food should be fun, enjoyable and a source of connection, not a source of anxiety. 🍁🦃 . . Intuitive eating is never the “just eat when you

Intuitive eating is never the “just eat when you’re hungry and stop when you’re full diet”. I see so many people who aren’t thoroughly trained in IE simplify it down to just hunger and fullness. Sure, hunger and fullness are two principles, but there are so many more too! . . Plus, when it gets simplified to just “eat when you’re hungry”, that could be harming a lot of individuals that don’t have strong hunger cues. If everyone relied on just their hunger cues, there would be a lot of inadequate nutrition! There are plenty of things that can effect the accuracy of our hunger cues - trauma, eating disorders, chronic dieting, stress & anxiety, chaotic schedules....so until you do some work with an RD on getting those cues back, it’s super helpful to have structured meal and snack times. A good rule of thumb is to try and eat something every 3-4 hours to coincide with our natural GI rhythms and blood sugar. . . #intuitiveeating #rdn #evidencebased #nutrition #nutritiontherapy #antidiet #allfoodsfit #health #wellbeing #haes
